Hieroglyphic Barrel Aged Imperial Saison by Gizmo Brew Works pays tribute to the brewers of ancient Egypt. Beer as we know it today, while very different than what it was in those times, may not exist without their efforts. Some have even credited these early brewers with the invention of written language, born from the necessity of accounting for beer transactions. Those people may have had a few too many beer transactions themselves.
This saison mashes together the typical Belgian-style notes of bubblegum and spice with a heavy dose of oak and char that elevate this humble farmhouse beverage. While not overly complex, the flavor profile is perfect for the lighter body and allows for the barrel aged twist on the style to shine. For me, this is the perfect beer to close out the summer and prep the palate for the heavier beers of fall.
