The Event Horizon Imperial Stout by Olde Hickory Brewery is a powerful bourbon barrel aged ale brewed with tons of dark malt and a touch of honey. From what I understand, an event horizon is some kind of boundary in spacetime that exists between the limits of a black hole from which nothing can escape, also known as “the point of no return.” I probably did a horrible job of explaining that science, but luckily I can stick to the beer version of black holes. Who needs science when you have beer? Unless you’re a brewer… since beer is science, but let’s not go there.
The Event Horizon pours a deep, pitch black with a thin, ruby head. The aroma is a thick veil of sticky malt. Strong bourbon and oak tones outline a robust body of dark chocolate and brown sugar. Plum and other dark fruits can also be detected on the nose.
The powerful characteristics in the aroma are amplified in the palate obliterating flavor. This black hole of malt radiates dark chocolate, coffee, and molasses. The barrel aging is highly noticeable throughout the profile with hardy oak and vanilla. Fig, plum, and black cherry provide a burst of bright flavors to contrast the rich base. The body is thick and heavy with a syrupy, velvety texture from the honey.
The Event Horizon is a complex imperial stout that features a depth of flavor that defies space and time. This stout is on the heavier side of full-bodied, so you may want to grab a friend to help polish off a 22 ounce bomber. However, if you’re as bold as this stout, you may want to give it a go on your own. Just remember, you can’t escape from The Event Horizon. On the other hand, why would you want to?
