I’m not exactly sure what to expect from the Smoked Mexican Lager by Hi-Wire Brewing, but the bears on the label seem to be having a pretty good time… It reminds me of a few Cinco de Mayo parties I attended in college. It’s always been a dream of mine to have a fiesta with live bears. This smoked Mexican lager may be the closest I’ll ever get. So with that, it’s time to get this party started.
This lager pours a clear amber with a thick, sudsy head. The aroma has a nice bready base with hints of smoke and spice. A creamy sweetness smoothes the edges. This offering is more aromatic than other lagers but not so much that it abandons the style.
The flavor has a hoppy lemon punch that transitions into peppery hop spice. The back end of the profile is smoky and bitter with tones of peat. The body is very light with a moderate level of carbonation that awakens the flavor. Again, the flavors are more robust than other lagers, but the beverage maintains the typical lager drinkability.
If you’re a party animal that likes a swillable lager with a little bit of meat on its bones, then the Smoked Mexican Lager by Hi-Wire Brewing is for you. Whether you’re having chips and queso or a nice, juicy rib eye, this lager is a solid choice. Party on bears… Party on…
