Back in November, I tasted Wicked Weed’s Pernicious IPA for the first time, and I was blown away by the depth and complexity of hop flavor. I remember thinking that they must have wrung out every last drop of flavor from the hops with Pernicious, but this was not the case! Their Freak of Nature Double IPA takes the hop intensity to another level with a palate pulverizing portion of humulus lupulus. It goes without saying that I’m beyond stoked to give this herbaceous mutant a try.
Freak of Nature pours a redish straw, almost copper, with a fluffy head of white foam. The aroma is an outstanding assortment of fruits: orange, pineapple, lemon, and lime. The tropical citrus is outlined by a peppery spice and a hoppy herbal sensation. You can definitely sense the enormous quantities of hops used in this brew.
The flavor is a veritable hop grenade. This IPA will scorch the palate with intense lemon, peppery spice, and dank pine. A malty base of toasted bread quickly disintegrates into further hop notes of apricot, orange, and a lingering bitter finish. The body is just heavy enough to deliver the hop explosion without detracting from the star of the show.
Freak of Nature Double IPA by Wicked Weed brewing is a hop lovers’ dream that will give your palate third degree hop burns. What Wicked Weed is able to do with hops is thoroughly impressive. You get the tropical fruit, the citrus, the dankness, the bitterness, the earthy herbal aroma… What else could you possibly want?! Delicious!
