It’s reasonable to have some hesitation before ingesting an IPA named Pernicious by a brewery called Wicked Weed. This beer is virtually titled “Poison”… Despite these warnings, the judges of the 2015 Great American Beer Festival were brave enough to imbibe this toxic potion and liked it so much that they awarded it a silver medal. Now I’m left with this dilemma: Do I perform the beer drinking equivalent of walking into a burning building, or do I pass on a GABF silver medal winner… In defense of Wicked Weed, the labeling is accurate to some extent, and I do respect transparency… Alright, I’ve talked myself into it!
Pernicious pours a peck of pickled peppers (golden straw with a thin, wispy head). The aroma is like a Carmen Miranda headdress of fruity goodness. Lemon, Grapefruit, and Pineapple notes rest on a light, malty frame. The robust presence of tropical fruit is astounding.
The flavor profile is also decidedly fruity with tart notes of lemon, grapefruit, and sour apple. This is supplemented by a light, herbaceous spice and a hint of sweet malt. The level of balance is exceptional. The light, crisp body finishes with a lingering bitterness and bright fruit tones.
Pernicious is a fruit-filled masterpiece of hop magic. The level of flavor that Wicked Weed is able to squeeze out of their hops is amazing. Paired with an equally extraordinary level of balance, I find it hard to believe Pernicious could have any bad or harmful intentions. Poison or not; you’re going to want to get your hands on this.
