24 Carrot Golden Ale is one of the latest Stone Brewing collaborations, featuring Monkey Paw Brewing and Juli Goldenberg. Wait… Juli Goldenberg!?… That’s right! This collaboartion features a homebrewer. But not just any homebrewer… The winner of the 2015 Stone Homebrew Competition to be exact! Needless to say, I’m eager to find out how close Juli and the gang came to brewing a carrot cake.
This ale pours a clear, redish gold hue with a thick, creamy head. This beer would have looked just like a slice of carrot cake if it had a cloudier, unfiltered appearance. The aromatics are out in full force with vanilla, baking spices, and floral vegetal notes. These qualities do well to build on the desired illusion.
The flavor profile is a bundle of baking spices, most notably cinnamon. Sweet vanilla combined with aspects of carrot and raisin comprise the smooth, creamy base of the ale. Hoppy citrus weaves in and out of this baker’s delight with a bittersweet finish.
24 Carrot is a valiant attempt at a carrot cake ale that delivers on nearly all expectations. It’s hard to believe that Stone Brewing, the professors of hoptology, could be involved in such a sugary sweet concoction. Overall, this brew is a playful change of pace that is best enjoyed in a tasting setting with a group of friends. However, if you REALLY like carrot cake, the friends are optional.
