The Fear may be the creepiest looking flying dog to date. I mean seriously, is there anything more terrifying than projectile fish eye vomit? Plus… he’s sitting like a human… and that just creeps me right the F out. The Fear is probably also one of the most powerful pumpkin ales you’ll find this season at 9% ABV. With that said, I think I’m ready for this powerful potion to terrify the fish eyes out of me.
The Fear pours a translucent dark brown with a bright ruby tint that contrasts the thick, beige head. The aroma has a mellow vanilla fragrance with spice notes of cinnamon and nutmeg. There is a slight hint of pumpkin on the nose with sweet brown sugar.
The flavor profile also has a vanilla tone with pumpkin and spice. The body is a thick swamp of malt with dark chocolate, coffee, and slight toffee notes. The pumpkin is somewhat subdued by the heavy malt, giving this brew the feel of an imperial porter or stout. The heavy body has a creamy mouthfeel that makes it fairly easy to drink despite the robust flavors and alcohol potency.
The Fear by Flying Dog is a pleasant fall seasonal in which the pumpkin and spice play a supporting role to the heavy malts. It may scare off some of the pumpkin spice/pumpkin pie crowd. However, if you enjoy a heavy hitting seasonal with a vicious malt backbone (and fish eyes), then there’s nothing to fear!
