If craft beers were music genres, imperials would be heavy metal. Imperials are amplified versions of the base style with more robust flavors and aromas. They also typically feature an ABV high enough to make you bite the head off a dove. As such, we would expect Gourd Rocker Imperial Pumpkin Porter by Double Barley to be a face melting, high octane upgrade from your typical pumpkin seasonal.
Gourd Rocker pours a deep, dark brown that looks almost black in the glass. The head is a thin, sudsy veil that dissipates rapidly. The aroma is sweet molasses with pumpkin, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. This brew is already venturing deeply into pumpkin pie territory.
The flavor profile begins with vanilla and dark fruit before transitioning into a more familiar pumpkin flavor. The pumpkin base is wrapped in baking spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. A combination of nutty pecan, molasses, and light maple contribute to a lingering bittersweet finish. The body is unsurprisingly heavy, although it has a smooth character that lightens the impact.
Gourd Rocker may not lead to the decapitation of the family parrot, but it’s sure to thrash your palate in ways you never thought pumpkin could. Although the pumpkin is overshadowed by the intensity of other flavors at time, this brew is unmistakably pumpkin pie. Rock on Double Barley!
