Cottonwood by Foothills Brewing is an ale brewed with real pumpkin as well as organic spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger. Cottonwood definitely gets extra points for using real/quality ingredients, but I must say… I miss the king. Some of you may remember the old school label that featured the stoic pumpkin king. With a pumpkin in one hand and bejeweled pumpkin stein in the other, he ruled over the pumpkin lands of Cottonwood. It’ll be hard to look past this omission, but I’m willing to give it a try.
Cottonwood Pumpkin pours a clear amber with a creamy, white head. The carbonation is highly visible and rapidly rushes to the top. The aroma has a subtle pumpkin base with light clove, cinnamon, and other spices.
Pumpkin also comprises the foundation of the flavor profile with cinnamon, nutmeg, and other spices. A snap of ginger and mild tartness make a surprise appearance mid-sip. The finish is clean with a delicate hint of toasty malt. This ale has a light body with a decent level of carbonation that makes it very sessionable.
Cottonwood is a subtle pumpkin ale with an unexpected twist of ginger and tartness. While not quite the same ale I remember the king ruling over, it’s a great fall session option that will serve you well at any tailgate. Just don’t expect anything king sized in the flavor department.
