Seriously… a collaboration between Stone, Ecliptic, and Wicked Weed; It sounds like the beer geek equivalent of a middle school lunch table putting together an impossible alliance of super heroes. As if the collaboration itself wasn’t crazy enough, the story behind the beverage they created borders on insanity. This trio of brewing titans produced a Belgian-style tripel and a West Coast IPA that were mixed 25%/75% (respectively) to generate what can only be described as a liquid chimera. The tripel portion of the beverage has an additional wrinkle of complexity in that it was aged for four months in red wine barrels that had been repurposed as tequila aging vessels. Insanity…
Points Unknown pours a clear, golden copper with a bready head that has some serious lasting power. The aroma is packed with citrus and pine from the IPA and baking spices, banana, and orange peel from the Belgian tripel. The hops own the largest share of the aromatics with Belgian elements shining through on the edges like a halo of funk.
The flavor profile is intense and confusing. It begins with a hint of orange that bursts into a Goliath of sweet, malty flavors. Lemon and grapefruit rest on the shoulders of this malty giant before the body comes crashing down in a cacophony of concentrated hop and Belgian flavors that attack the palate like dueling death metal bands. This is followed by hop spice and a strong alcohol presence that echo out like a shockwave. A fallout of sweetness and bitterness coat the palate as the intense flavors fade.
The power and creativity behind this brew are beyond any collaboration I’ve experienced. However, this level of intensity is both a gift and a curse. The robust flavors clash at times, leading to imbalances and confusion that shock the palate. Although this isn’t something you’d likely want to consume on a regular basis, it makes for a refreshing and unique experience. As such, this beer is best served as an experience to be shared in a tasting setting.
