If you’re a fan of peanut butter cups, stop reading this immediately and seek out a Sweet Baby Jesus! Chocolate Peanut Butter Porter by DuClaw! I wasn’t sure what to expect from a porter named after the phrase one should exclaim after drinking said beverage… from a brewery that sounds like it could be the final evolution of a seal-based pocket monster. Needless to say, I was not prepared for the awesomeness that ensued.
This porter pours a dark, almost black, brown with a creamy beige head that almost looks like a dollop of peanut butter resting atop a brick of dark chocolate. It smells exactly like a peanut butter cup… It’s disturbing how accurately DuClaw was able to portray this aroma. The roasty malt notes add an element of warmth that makes the total package reminiscent of a chocolate peanut butter pie.
The flavor is also terrifyingly on point. It’s like someone made a hot chocolate out of peanut butter cups and threw it in the refrigerator. There’s a light hoppy spice toward the end of the flavor profile that helps to balance it out. Aside from that, it’s pure peanut butter and chocolate. The body is actually a little lighter than expected but still solidly in the medium zone.
Craft breweries continue to amaze me with the level of parity they are able to achieve with foods that have no business being fermented beverages. SBJ by DuClaw is one of those rare novelty treats that live up to the hype. I don’t know how they made it happen. I just hope they keep doing it. My money is on DuClaw having Willy Wonka chained to the radiator space heater in their brewery. This is some seriously good stuff.
