Here’s an IPA from everyone’s favorite circus themed brewery, Hi-Pitch by Hi-Wire Brewing. When I first saw this label, I thought it was a picture of some crossbow style cannon aiming down a hippopotamus’ throat (or hop-popotamus? ha… ha…). Luckily, it’s just a hippo spittin’ some mad rhymes in the booth (The Notorious H-I-P? Hip-hop-potamus? dot dot dot). It’s probably about time to get on to the beer…
Hi-Pitch pours a solid copperish amber hue with a thick, foamy head that has a lasting presence. The aroma is fruity with notes of citrus and peach balanced out by a toasty sweetness from the malt. I’m becoming a fan of aromas like this that have a little more than citrus to wake it up.
The flavor profile leans back toward a more standard west coast-style IPA with strong notes of citrus, floral spice, and pine. However, the malt plays a slightly larger role than other IPAs with a thick caramel body forming the foundation of the brew. This gives the hop flavor a background to pop on but also mellows it out quite a bit.
Hi-Pitch IPA will delight drinkers who prefer their hop flavors served on a more palatable base. It’s a little heavier on the malt than other IPAs but certainly delivers on robust hop flavor. If you like IPAs but prefer not to have a crossbow style hop cannon blasting down your gullet, this is the brew for you. Nevertheless, any IPA drinker will have little trouble making Hi-Pitch do a disappearing act.
