Double Dog Double IPA by Flying Dog Brewery is certainly not a beverage for the timid. The man/dog/falcon (mandocan?) creature on the label is an absolutely perfect depiction of a double IPA induced hangover. Unshaven, missing some clothes, hunched/pained composure, beer breathe… It’s all there. Weighing in at 11.5% ABV, it won’t take much of this potion to get lighter drinkers into mandocan territory.
Double Dog pours a clear amber with one of the thickest heads I’ve ever seen on an IPA. There’s even a slight sparkle to the head, kind of like Santa Claus’ beard. If mystical sparkles aren’t enough to get you excited about this brew, the aroma is straight fierce. Equally robust citrus and pine notes are layered over a strong malty sweet/boozy background. Super intense…
The flavor profile takes the intensity to a whole new level. I seriously think that they may make other IPAs by mixing 2 teaspoons of Double Dog with soda water. Double Dog IPA Extract may be a more fitting name. You get intense grapefruit, lemon, and pine that immediately rip your face off. Soon after, you’re hit with a massive wave of sweet toffee malt that masks a sizeable portion of the ABV. Once the sweetness subsides, there’s a concentrated bitter fallout that saps the moisture from your mouth. Again… Intense…
Double Dog Double IPA is a beer for seasoned/adventurous drinkers. While the sweetness is slightly overpowering for the style, there is absolutely no mistaking the hop presence. If you’re ready to take your IPA drinking experience to the next level, look no further than Double Dog. Tread lightly or suffer the curse of the mandocan.
