Hop Hash Double IPA by SweetWater is an IPA infused with pure, resiny hop lupulin (hash). Some of you may be wondering to yourself whether you’ll pass a drug test after drinking this beverage. Fun Fact: Humulus (hops) and Cannabis (hemp) are actually in the same family of flowering plants (Cannabaceae). Fun Fact Part II: You will only test positive for Humulus from consuming this beverage. I promise that the rest of this review will be in English… or something relatively close.
Hop Hash pours a bright, golden amber with a resiny head of moderate thickness. The aroma is actually fairly sweet with notes of orange and apricot outlined by a backdrop of biscuity malt. The hoppy scent leans toward the floral/citrusy side of the spectrum but puts a little more emphasis on sweetness than other DIPAs.
The flavor contrasts the sweet scent with a sharp, lemony essence that progresses into a palate-drying pine. The bitter, resinous flavor that takes over mid-sip also imparts a light, peppery spice. These more nuanced flavors are highlighted by a persistent light, malty sweetness. This contrast really makes the hop flavors pop.
Between Hop Hash and 420, SweetWater is no stranger to stoner references. They are also no stranger to brewing some seriously dank beverages. For those of you keeping score at home, this one also makes me want to eat a fish… and a bunch of other things.
