I find myself running into more and more of these India pale lager style beers, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It’s quickly turning into my favorite tailgating option with its full-flavored, sessionable goodness. Anyway, my growing fondness of the style combined with the depiction of a turntable powered robot was enough to sell me on giving the Dream Machine IPL a spin.
The Dream Machine pours a deep, golden amber with a thick, fluffy head. The aroma was an interesting combination of sweet malt, banana bread, and citrus. Hmmm… that doesn’t sound right. I’m going to blame that on turntable robot hypnosis.
The flavor includes the obligatory grapefruit burst from the hops but also has some tropical fruit undertones that carry it along. There’s also a lingering sweetness that jumps in and out of the profile. Dream Machine finishes with a peppery spice that transforms into an astringent snap.
Dream Machine has a lot more going on flavor-wise than other IPLs I’ve tried. I personally prefer when this style is done as an IPA Lite, but I respect that this brew took a slightly different path. Like most other Magic Hat offerings, it wasn’t quite what I expected, but it certainly didn’t disappoint.
