Well…This is weird… The Voodoo Doughnut: Pretzel, Raspberry & Chocolate Ale by Rogue (that’s a mouthful) is the epitome of a novelty beer. I think in some parts of the world they may actually stone you to death (or stab you in the heart with a pretzel?) for referring to this as beer. Beer or not, how could I resist trying this?!
This playful ale pours a brown so dark that it almost resembles the shadow monster/voodoo doll on the bottle. I’d also like to say that the shadow monster is standing behind some of the worst wallpaper I’ve ever seen. The aroma is dominated by dark chocolate and raspberry (GASP!). However, I didn’t pick up on any pretzel smells. :(
The flavor is distinctly dark chocolate and raspberry (double GASP!) but still no pretzel. :( :( However, there are some light hints of coffee that tie the total package together. The taste should be very familiar to anyone that has dipped a raspberry-filled jelly doughnut into a cup of coffee. While the flavors relate most closely with a stout, the body is actually very light.
Overall, I would say that the aromas and flavors of this beer (sorry purists) are as advertized (sans-pretzel). It’s actually pretty rare that a novelty beer delivers on the flavors that it claims, so props to Rogue. The light body makes this beer very easy to enjoy, and the bleeding shadow monster and horrible wallpaper are just a bonus. Everyone should experience this at least once.
