The Narwhal Imperial Stout by Sierra Nevada is as awesome and legendary (awgendary?) as the creature in which it derives its name. Take a journey with me into the abyss as we unravel the mysteries of this arctic sea unicorn.
This stout pours a solid pitch black. You can almost hear the liquid plummeting into the glass like an anvil. The aroma has a pleasant sweetness to it that conjures visions of chocolate and freshly brewed coffee. Going off the aroma alone, you may confuse this with an espresso or latte from your local coffee shop. Great for you early morning beer enthusiasts…
The flavor profile begins with subtle hints of dark chocolate and progresses into bold notes of dark fruit. I can almost detect bittersweet notes of dark cherries or black berries. The stout finishes smooth with a lingering flavor of dark coffee (are you noticing a theme here?). Although this beer has a heavy body, it has a smooth, velvety mouth feel that complements the flavors well.
Stouts aren’t typically my first choice when it comes to style of beer, but the Narwhal Imperial Stout may be changing that. The bold flavors are enjoyable without being incredibly overpowering. Like the narwhal, this big bodied stout swims gracefully across the palate and is as awgendary as they come (horn not included).
